What Is Cannabutter Separation?
Cannabutter Separation will take place when using the Water Method for infusing butter or ghee with Cannabis
The Cannabutter separation naturally occurs as the water and milk solids separate from the butter’s fat molecules as the butter-weed infusion cools.
The liquid will separate from the butter solids, making it easy to pour off.
Do not discard this liquid! Once strained off the butter mass, keep it in the fridge and add to smoothies or even your morning coffee.
Cannabutter Water Method: How To Make Infused Butter With Water
This process involves placing the butter or ghee in a pot with equal parts of water. Decarboxylated Cannabis is added to the butter-water mixture, and the Weed slowly infuses, allowing the cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes to attach to the fat molecules of the butter.
The water helps regulate the temperature, ensuring the butter and Weed does not burn while infusing.

Cannabutter Separation Water Process
Separating the water from the butter solids after making Cannabutter is straightforward. Once the infusion is complete, strain the Cannabutter mixture through a coffee filter, tea sieve, or cheesecloth.
Rest at room temperature, then place in the fridge overnight. As the butter solids harden, they will separate. Loosen the solid Cannabutter from the container and reserve the liquid for other purposes.
Advantages Of Adding Water When Making Cannabis Infusions
The main advantage of adding water when making Cannabutter is it helps regulate the temperature.
Cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes are all heat sensitive, and excessive or irregular heat control will affect the efficacy of your Cannabutter.
It can also help clarify any waste materials in the butter and Weed. For the best quality Cannabutter, we strongly suggest using ghee as it is already clarified.
How To Use Cannabis Trim To Make Cannabutter
When growing your own Herb, you always want to use every part of the plant. Using the trim for Cannabutter is a great idea!
The trim will be less potent than flower, kief, or concentrate; therefore, adjust your butter-to-weed ratio accordingly.
The golden rule, decarb your trim before making Cannabutter. To preserve as many trichomes as possible, decarb in a mason jar and use the same jar to infuse the butter.
How You Can Use Cannabutter
Cannabutter is so versatile. One can never have enough butter, and in the words of the all-important Julia Child, “Fat gives things flavor.”
